Facebook Marketplace (EU)

2019–present · online classified advertising, social networking

Europe fined Meta about €798 million in November 2024 for tying Facebook Marketplace to the social network. Meta is challenging that fine, so the antitrust case is still live. A separate DMA label on Marketplace was annulled by the General Court on 3 June 2026.

The story

Classifieds sites said Meta pushed Marketplace using a social network they could not match.

In November 2024 the Commission agreed on the tying theory and fined Meta about €798 million. Meta appealed. An appealed fine is not a closed case.

Marketplace was also labelled a DMA gatekeeper. The Commission repealed that label in April 2025, and on 3 June 2026 the General Court annulled the designation. Messenger's designation stayed.

The fine and the DMA label are two files. Losing the label does not erase the fine, and winning the appeal of the fine would not restore the label.

Why it matters

Independent classifieds sites were the businesses that complained.

A tying fine and a gatekeeper label are different tools, and only one of them survived into mid-2026.

What was claimed

Meta tied Marketplace to a dominant social network.

Rivals could not match the distribution inside Facebook.

The other side

Meta says Marketplace is a feature users want and that classifieds compete across many apps.

It is challenging the fine.

What it means for you

Marketplace can still appear inside Facebook while the fine is on appeal.

The June 2026 court ruling removed a DMA label. It did not decide the tying fine.

Bottom line

The €798 million Marketplace tying fine is on appeal and still live. The DMA gatekeeper label for Marketplace was annulled on 3 June 2026.

Formal snapshot

Summary: The European Commission fined Meta about €798 million in November 2024 for tying Facebook Marketplace to the social network. A separate DMA designation of Marketplace was later undone.

Regulator / plaintiff argument: Meta allegedly leveraged personal social network dominance to boost Marketplace visibility and used data advantages unavailable to independent classifieds platforms.

Outcome: The November 2024 tying decision is under challenge. Separately, the Commission repealed Marketplace's DMA gatekeeper label in April 2025, and on 3 June 2026 the General Court annulled that designation while leaving Messenger's designation in place.
