Competition record

Atlassian's Jira and Confluence are the system of record for many software teams. The competition issue is migration cost and a marketplace of apps that only run on Atlassian.
Overview
Atlassian Corporation sells Jira, Confluence, Trello, and related developer tools. Unlike Microsoft, it does not own an operating system. Its power is that engineering tickets, decisions, and documentation accumulate in one vendor's cloud.
The company ended most server licenses and moved customers to Cloud. That was a commercial migration and a lock-in event: apps, permissions, and automation rules had to be rebuilt. Competitors such as Linear, Notion, and GitLab win new teams more easily than they win a ten-year Jira history.
The Atlassian Marketplace is a platform. Third-party apps pay a revenue share and depend on APIs. A policy change or a first-party feature that copies a popular app is the self-preferencing pattern, at a smaller scale than a mobile app store.
Atlassian has bought Trello, Opsgenie, and Loom. Each deal removed a tool that sat beside Jira. Further buys of agile or documentation tools would be reviewed for loss of an independent workflow.
Competition footprint
Ticket history is not portable in any way teams trust. Lock-in is the archive.
Cloud-only licensing removed a self-hosted alternative that some customers used as leverage.
Marketplace fees and first-party copies are a platform-governance issue for small app vendors.
Bundling Loom or agile tools into Jira subscriptions can be a tie if the base tracker is the only practical option.
Consumer & business angle
Employees live in Jira even when they never chose it. A bad migration is a company-wide productivity hit, which protects the incumbent.
A two-person app studio on the Marketplace can lose its business if Atlassian ships the same feature or changes the revenue share.
What to watch
- Marketplace revenue-share and API deprecations.
- First-party features that match top Marketplace apps.
- Acquisitions of independent documentation or incident tools.
