Autodesk's AutoCAD and Revit files are the working language of large parts of architecture and engineering. Subscription licensing and file formats are the lock-in; resale of perpetual seats is the fight with customers.
Overview
Autodesk, Inc. sells design software used by architects, engineers, and manufacturers. AutoCAD, Revit, and Fusion 360 are entrenched in project specifications. A building designed in Revit is not casually redesigned in a rival tool mid-project.
The company moved from perpetual licenses to subscriptions. Customers who used to buy a seat and resell it now rent access. That shift raises a resale-restriction question: not a statute that bans subscriptions, but a change in whether a secondary market for licenses can exist.
File formats and object libraries keep projects inside Autodesk. A rival CAD program that opens a file imperfectly is not a real alternative on a job with liability for the drawings. Interoperability is the competitive bottleneck.
Construction data from building-information models is becoming a platform. If Autodesk ties cloud collaboration, rendering, or analysis to the core design seat, project teams pay for the bundle because the drawing already lives there.
Competition footprint
Industry specifications that say 'Revit' effectively procure one vendor. That is customer habit plus file lock-in, which is durable even without an exclusive contract.
Subscription-only licensing ended much of the perpetual-license resale market. Courts have been skeptical of antitrust attacks on that model unless there is a separate exclusionary act.
Bundled cloud services can be challenged as ties if a dominant design format is available only with an unrelated analytics or visualization product.
Autodesk has bought adjacent tools over the years. Further deals in construction data would be reviewed for loss of an independent workflow.
Consumer & business angle
Architecture firms budget Autodesk like rent. Leaving means retraining staff and risking a client who requires the incumbent file format.
Students learn the same tools, which replenishes the installed base. A switch is a firm-wide decision, not a personal app choice.
What to watch
- File-format and API commitments that would let rival tools round-trip Revit models.
- Subscription terms that disable paid-up perpetual seats or block license transfers.
- Mergers that combine design authoring with construction bidding or cost data.
