Cadence Design Systems
Deep profile · 0 linked library matters
Cadence is one of the two companies, with Synopsys, whose software is required to design a modern chip. Virtuoso, Innovus, and Spectre files do not migrate cleanly, so a multi-year license is also a lock on the design database.
Overview
Cadence is based in San Jose. Chip designers use Virtuoso for custom and analog layout, Innovus and Genus for digital implementation, Spectre for simulation, and Allegro for printed circuit boards, and they license Tensilica and other IP blocks.
Synopsys is the other full-flow vendor. Siemens EDA is a real alternative in parts of the flow, especially boards and some verification, but a leading-edge system-on-chip still leaves the customer choosing between Cadence and Synopsys for signoff.
Licenses are sold as multi-year bundles, and design data, scripts, and foundry rule decks accumulate inside one vendor's database. Moving a tapeout flow is a program measured in years, which is why the EDA renewal rarely becomes a true rebid.
Competition footprint
Analog and custom design is especially concentrated in Virtuoso, with a thin set of substitutes.
Bundle pricing across simulation, implementation, and signoff makes dropping one tool expensive.
Foundry reference flows name supported EDA versions, which pushes customers back to the same two vendors.
Consumer & business angle
A design engineer trained on Virtuoso or Spectre cannot produce a tapeout on the other vendor's tools without a project reset.
Startup chip companies inherit the EDA vendor their foundry reference flow already supports.
What to watch
- Multi-year renewals at the largest fabless customers and whether any flow actually moves to Synopsys.
- Bundling of IP with tools, and whether AI-assisted design features stay inside the same two vendors.
