Cardinal Health
Deep profile · 0 linked library matters
Cardinal Health is one of the three US full-line drug wholesalers, alongside McKesson and Cencora. Independent pharmacies and hospitals depend on its deliveries, and its medical-products arm sells the gloves, gowns, and lab supplies around those drugs.
Overview
Cardinal Health is based in Dublin, Ohio. The pharmaceutical segment buys from manufacturers and delivers to retail pharmacies, hospitals, and health systems on a daily cadence that those customers cannot replicate themselves.
McKesson and Cencora are the other two national wholesalers. A pharmacy that leaves Cardinal has to re-cut purchasing, controlled-substance limits, and generic-source programs, which is why wholesale contracts last for years even though the drugs themselves are interchangeable.
The medical segment distributes products used in labs and at the bedside and is a different bid from the drug contract. Vertical integration by CVS, Optum, and Express Scripts changes which retail doors still buy through an independent wholesaler at all.
Competition footprint
Daily pharmaceutical delivery is a scale business split among Cardinal, McKesson, and Cencora.
Generic source programs steer a pharmacy's interchangeable drugs toward Cardinal's preferred label.
Specialty distribution for high-cost drugs is where manufacturer limited networks can bypass a wholesaler.
Consumer & business angle
An independent pharmacy that misses a Cardinal delivery misses the day's prescriptions.
Health-system pharmacies use Cardinal as inventory infrastructure, not as a brand their patients see.
What to watch
- Specialty-drug limited distribution networks that ship around the traditional wholesaler.
- Retail customer losses when pharmacies are owned by the same companies that run the benefit managers.
