Cargill
Deep profile · 2 linked library matters
Cargill is the largest private company in the United States and a top beef packer and grain trader. Visibility is low, concentration in cattle and grain handling is not.
Overview
Cargill, Incorporated is privately held. It trades grain, processes beef, makes animal feed, and ships commodities. Because it does not publish the disclosures of a public packer, its competitive role is easier to underestimate.
In US beef it is one of the four large packers. The same cattle-monopsony debate that covers JBS and Tyson covers Cargill. Ranchers do not get a fifth bidder of equal scale.
Grain handling elevators and export terminals are local bottlenecks. A farmer delivering corn may have one or two real buyers in driving distance. Cargill's network of those assets is a series of local markets, not one national price.
The company has been named in protein data and price investigations around industry benchmarking. Those allegations, where they exist, are about information exchange among competitors. They should be read from the dockets, not assumed as proved against every business line.
Competition footprint
Beef packing share puts Cargill inside the four-firm cattle bottleneck.
Elevator and export capacity are local essential facilities in practice.
Benchmark and data subscriptions shared among protein firms are the information-exchange theory.
Private ownership does not remove merger control if Cargill buys another handler or packer.
Consumer & business angle
A farmer's price is set by the elevator they can reach, not by a national average.
Consumers meet Cargill as an ingredient supplier behind store brands more often than as a label.
What to watch
- Elevator and terminal acquisitions in grain regions that already have few buyers.
- Beef-plant capacity changes among the four packers.
- Protein benchmarking cases and whether Cargill is a defendant or a witness.

EU · US · 1991–1995 · fined · 8 minCitric acid gives sodas and candy their tang. ADM and rivals allegedly fixed its price worldwide in the early 1990s—same corporate culture that produced the lysine scandal. Europe fined them; America had already prosecuted.
