Competition record
Cisco Systems
Deep profile · 0 linked library matters
Cisco sells the switches, routers, and Wi-Fi that run most large enterprise networks, plus Webex and Splunk. Arista contests the data center, and HPE, which now includes Juniper, contests the campus.
Overview
Cisco is based in San Jose. Catalyst and Nexus switches, Silicon One routing, Meraki cloud-managed networks, and Webex meetings are the products an enterprise IT team already has staff certified on.
Ethernet standards let a rival's box forward packets, but management software, support contracts, and spare-parts practice keep refresh cycles inside Cisco. Arista is the data-center switching rival, and HPE's networking business, including Juniper, is the campus and branch alternative procurement teams now score in the same RFP.
Splunk, which Cisco closed in 2024, adds security and observability seats on top of the network. A customer that sends switch telemetry and security logs into that stack has a second renewal, separate from the hardware support contract.
Competition footprint
Campus refresh cycles replace Catalyst and Meraki gear with more of the same management model.
Data-center leaf-and-spine bids are where Arista has a real chance to displace Nexus.
Splunk subscriptions attach a software renewal to customers who originally bought routers.
Consumer & business angle
Network engineers certified on Cisco IOS treat a vendor change as a retraining and a spare-parts problem.
Security teams that moved detections into Splunk now depend on Cisco for both the pipe and the log store.
What to watch
- Campus RFPs where HPE's Juniper portfolio is scored directly against Catalyst and Meraki.
- Whether Splunk renewals stay bundled with Cisco enterprise agreements.
