Competition record

ConocoPhillips

Deep profile · 0 linked library matters

ConocoPhillips is an upstream producer, and the Marathon Oil acquisition that closed in 2024 added shale inventory next to its Lower 48 position. ExxonMobil, Chevron, EOG, and Occidental compete for the same acreage and the same service crews.

Overview

ConocoPhillips is based in Houston and, unlike ExxonMobil or Shell, does not run a large downstream refining and retail system. The portfolio is unconventional shale in the Lower 48, including the Marathon Oil assets, plus Alaska and international projects.

The Marathon Oil deal closed in November 2024 after US antitrust review and put more Permian and other shale drilling locations under one operator. Neighbors still include ExxonMobil, Chevron, Occidental, and EOG, who bid for the same rigs, sand, and midstream capacity.

Alaska, including the Willow project on the North Slope, is a different regime: long lead times, a small set of operators, and pipeline capacity that all North Slope barrels share. Service companies such as SLB and Halliburton are suppliers, not peers.

Competition footprint

Lower 48 drilling inventory is now the combined ConocoPhillips and Marathon Oil acreage.

Shared midstream and frac-crew capacity in the Permian limits how fast any one operator can grow.

Alaska projects depend on pipeline access and a short list of operators and contractors.

Consumer & business angle

Mineral owners and royalty holders on former Marathon Oil leases now deal with ConocoPhillips as operator.

Midstream companies that connected those wells have one larger shipper to negotiate with.

What to watch

  • Permian and Bakken development pace on the combined acreage.
  • Willow and other Alaska project timing, and whether further acreage deals concentrate more drillable inventory.
