Deep profile · 0 linked library matters
Honda sells cars under Honda and Acura, and it is also one of the world's largest motorcycle makers. Toyota, Hyundai, and Nissan contest the US car lots, while Yamaha and Harley-Davidson contest the motorcycle dealers.
Overview
Honda is based in Tokyo and builds a large share of the Civics, CR-Vs, and Accords sold in the United States at plants in Ohio, Indiana, and Alabama. Hybrid powertrains developed in-house are the current constraint on which trims dealers can actually get.
US auto dealers are franchised, so allocation of hybrids and popular crossovers is a factory decision those dealers then retail. Motorcycle dealers are often on exclusive territories, a tighter vertical contract than the car side, covering Honda's bikes and power products such as generators and outboards in many of the same markets.
Acura is the premium channel against Lexus and the German brands, with a thinner dealer body. Parts and service for both brands run through those franchised dealers, which is the aftermarket relationship independent shops have to work around.
Competition footprint
US vehicle allocation runs through franchised Honda and Acura dealers fed by the Ohio, Indiana, and Alabama plants.
Motorcycle dealer territories limit how many stores in a town can sell Honda bikes.
Hybrid component supply decides which trims are available in a given month.
Consumer & business angle
Buyers waiting on a hybrid CR-V are waiting on plant allocation to a specific dealer.
A motorcycle shop inside a Honda territory cannot add the franchise if the territory is already filled.
What to watch
- Hybrid allocation to US dealers versus Toyota and Hyundai inventories.
- Motorcycle territory contracts and power-equipment distribution through the same dealer body.
