Competition record
PACCAR
Deep profile · 0 linked library matters
PACCAR builds Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks in North America and DAF trucks in Europe, and PACCAR Parts supplies the dealer bays. Daimler Truck's Freightliner, Volvo Trucks, and Traton's International are the other heavy-truck choices.
Overview
PACCAR is based in Bellevue, Washington. Kenworth and Peterbilt are sold through independent dealers who also stock PACCAR Parts, and many of those dealers offer a PACCAR MX engine or a Cummins engine in the same chassis.
Freightliner is the volume leader in US Class 8, with Volvo and International as the other full-line alternatives. A fleet specification that names Peterbilt or Kenworth also names the dealer who will do the maintenance, which is why the parts bay at that dealer is part of the sale.
DAF competes in Europe against Volvo, Daimler Truck, and Traton brands. PACCAR Financial is the captive lender on many new trucks, a vertical add-on the fleet can replace with a bank only if it wants to unbundle the deal.
Competition footprint
Dealer parts inventories are brand-specific and pull service work to the Kenworth or Peterbilt store.
Engine choice inside the truck is a contest between PACCAR's MX and Cummins.
Class 8 fleet specifications lock a brand in for a replacement cycle of several years.
Consumer & business angle
A fleet that standardized on Peterbilt sends breakdowns to the dealer who has those parts.
Owner-operators choosing between Peterbilt and Freightliner are also choosing a service network.
What to watch
- Class 8 share versus Freightliner, Volvo, and International.
- Whether dealers keep exclusive parts pipelines and how often fleets spec a Cummins engine.
