Philips

Deep profile · 1 linked library matter

Philips is the Dutch electronics company that supplied cathode-ray tubes for televisions and monitors. The Commission's 2012 decision fined that cartel about €1.47 billion for price fixing and market sharing arranged in green meetings.

Overview

Philips is the Dutch company households knew for televisions, lighting, and small appliances. In the tube era it also supplied the cathode-ray tubes other manufacturers built into sets and monitors. Part of that supply sat in a tube venture with LG. The cartel file is about those tubes. Philips' later shift toward health technology is a different business from the one the 2012 decision describes.

The Commission found price fixing and market sharing, carried out in part through meetings the participants called green meetings. Philips is in that decision with LG, Panasonic, and other tube makers. Sharing a venture with LG did not make Philips a bystander. The company is named because of the tube business.

About €1.47 billion is the total, not a Philips-only fine. This profile does not invent a split. Set makers paid for tubes. Viewers and office buyers paid for the finished screen.

Competition footprint

Philips' exposure is the television and monitor tube business, including the venture with LG.

Green meetings coordinated prices and customers among rival tube suppliers.

The 2012 cartel total is about €1.47 billion, recorded here without a company allocation.

Consumer & business angle

European set makers buying tubes from Philips, or from the Philips-LG venture, were purchasing a cartelized component.

A household with a Philips television was downstream, and so was a household whose set used a Philips tube under another brand.

What to watch

  • Damages claims that have to separate the Philips-LG tube venture from Philips' other products.
  • How a company that has left much of consumer electronics still carries a component-cartel finding in buyer litigation.
