Competition record
Deep profile · 0 linked library matters
Reddit runs topic communities moderated by volunteers and sells ads against logged-in users. API pricing set in 2023 ended many third-party clients, and licensing the corpus to AI developers is a separate commercial product.
Overview
Reddit is based in San Francisco. Subreddits are the product, volunteer moderators enforce rules, and the company sells advertising and, increasingly, access to public posts for companies training or searching with AI models.
In 2023 Reddit raised the price of its API and third-party apps such as Apollo lost access. Users and moderators who depended on those clients had to move to Reddit's own app, which is a platform rule deciding which software can sit on top of the communities.
Advertisers buy community context they cannot get from Meta or TikTok in the same form, and Discord and X compete for the same kind of logged-in time. Moderator tools and API credentials are the operational dependency: a banned app or a revoked bot stops working even if the community remains.
Competition footprint
API terms decide which third-party clients, research tools, and bots can read or post.
Ad load in the home feed and inside subreddits changes the product moderators volunteered to tend.
Data-licensing deals monetize the corpus without going through the ad auction.
Consumer & business angle
Moderators who built communities over years have no way to take the full audience to another host cleanly.
Developers of third-party Reddit clients live or die by the API price and the credential rules.
