RKO

Deep profile · 1 linked library matter

RKO was one of the major Hollywood studios bound up in the 1948 Paramount Decrees. The decrees dealt with block booking and theater ownership, and the library records a remedy.

Overview

RKO Radio Pictures was a major studio, smaller than Paramount or MGM, with its own productions, its own distribution, and theater interests in the studio system. It is the studio of the 1930s and 1940s, later wound down as a full major. The decree case still includes it. Size inside the oligopoly did not take a studio out of the booking rules.

Block booking and theater ownership were the practices the 1948 decrees addressed. An independent exhibitor dealing with RKO faced the same structure as with the larger majors: films offered in a package, and a system in which studio-affiliated theaters held the advantage on first run. The library records the outcome as a remedy.

This profile is that historic RKO, not a later company that reused the letters. The competitive story is exhibition. Who owned the screen, and did the exhibitor have to take a slate of films to get one people would pay to see.

Competition footprint

RKO is one of the decree studios, a major with distribution and theater ties.

Block booking conditioned a wanted title on a package the exhibitor had to license.

The remedy is the 1948 decrees, shared with the other majors and recorded as a remedy in the library.

Consumer & business angle

Independent theaters that licensed RKO product had to take the booking terms the studio system offered.

Audiences in RKO-affiliated houses saw a program shaped by the studio's own exhibition interest.

What to watch

  • Histories of the decrees that still list RKO among the five majors, even though the studio later left the business.
  • Licensing disputes that use the RKO-era package deal as the plain-English meaning of block booking.
