Synopsys
Deep profile · 0 linked library matters
Synopsys is the other half of the chip-design software market with Cadence, and since July 2025 it also owns Ansys simulation. Digital implementation, signoff, DesignWare IP, and multiphysics analysis can now sit on one contract.
Overview
Synopsys is based in Sunnyvale. Fusion Compiler and Design Compiler implement digital chips, VCS simulates them, PrimeTime and signoff tools clear them for tapeout, and DesignWare supplies interface IP that customers drop into the same flow.
Cadence is the alternative EDA suite. A customer can mix tools, and many do at the margins, but the core digital flow and the foundry's golden rule deck keep most advanced designs inside one of the two vendors for a given program.
The Ansys acquisition closed in July 2025 and added structural, fluids, and electromagnetic simulation used by companies that also design chips and systems. That extends Synopsys from the silicon flow into the physics of the product around the chip, which is a different budget from the traditional EDA seat.
Competition footprint
Signoff tools are the step a foundry will not waive, and Synopsys or Cadence supplies them.
DesignWare IP bundles interfaces with the EDA contract so a rival IP vendor sees fewer openings.
Ansys tools add a simulation renewal for customers who previously only licensed chip-design seats.
Consumer & business angle
Chip teams schedule tapeout around Synopsys or Cadence licenses, and a lapsed seat stops the project.
Mechanical and electronics groups that both used Ansys may now negotiate that software with the EDA vendor.
What to watch
- Whether Ansys multiphysics and Synopsys signoff are sold as a single enterprise agreement.
- Customer flows that still split work with Cadence, and any foundry rule deck that favors one vendor.
