Competition record
Twilio
Deep profile · 0 linked library matters
Twilio sells the APIs developers use to send text messages, voice calls, WhatsApp messages, and, through SendGrid, email. Phone-number registration and sender reputation sit with the account, which is why a switch to Sinch or Bandwidth is a project.
Overview
Twilio is based in San Francisco. A software company embeds its APIs so that one-time passwords, shipping alerts, and call-center calls leave from Twilio numbers, and Segment, which Twilio owns, is the customer-data product attached to that same relationship.
Sinch, Bandwidth, MessageBird, and Amazon's messaging services compete for the same API calls. Carrier surcharges and US A2P 10DLC registration travel with the brand and the use case, so moving vendors means re-registering campaigns, not just changing an API key.
SendGrid's email reputation is a separate asset: a domain that has been warmed up on SendGrid can land in spam if it moves carelessly. Segment profiles add another store of customer events that marketing teams build workflows on.
Competition footprint
Application code, webhook handlers, and registered phone campaigns are the lock-in.
Carrier fees are pass-through, so list price is not the full cost a customer compares.
Segment profiles and SendGrid reputation are adjacent locks on the same account.
Consumer & business angle
End users never see Twilio, but a failed one-time password is the outage they feel.
A startup that hardcoded Twilio's API spends engineering time, not a procurement cycle, to leave.
What to watch
- Messaging fee changes and 10DLC or WhatsApp policy shifts that raise the cost of staying.
- Whether Amazon or another hyperscaler bundles a good-enough messaging API into existing cloud commits.
