Competition record
Valero
Deep profile · 0 linked library matters
Valero is an independent refiner on the Gulf Coast and in the Mid-Continent, and it is a large ethanol producer. Marathon Petroleum, Phillips 66, and the refining arms of ExxonMobil and Chevron are the competitors, and Diamond Green Diesel is its renewable-diesel venture with Darling.
Overview
Valero is based in San Antonio and buys crude rather than producing it. Gulf Coast refineries are the core, exporting products and supplying US markets, and ethanol plants add a renewable fuel that is blended under the same regulatory system.
Refining margins, not a consumer brand, are the business, although the Valero name appears on branded wholesale fuel. Marathon Petroleum and Phillips 66 are the other large independent refiners, and they chase the same crude baskets and the same product pipelines.
Diamond Green Diesel, the joint venture with Darling Ingredients, turns waste oils into renewable diesel. Feedstock access, especially used cooking oil and animal fats, is the constraint, and Darling is both partner and a key supplier of that feedstock.
Competition footprint
Gulf Coast refining capacity and pipeline connections decide what product Valero can place.
Ethanol production is tied to corn supply and to renewable-fuel credit markets.
Renewable-diesel output depends on feedstock Darling and others can aggregate.
Consumer & business angle
Fuel distributors who lift Valero barrels need the refinery to be up and the pipeline to have space.
Restaurants and renderers who sell used oil into renewable diesel are upstream of Diamond Green Diesel.
What to watch
- Gulf Coast utilization and any refinery closure or expansion that changes regional supply.
- Feedstock contracts for Diamond Green Diesel and ethanol's place in the renewable-fuel credit system.
