Competition record

Zscaler

Deep profile · 0 linked library matters

Zscaler steers a company's web and private-application traffic through its own cloud instead of through on-premises firewalls. Palo Alto Networks, Netskope, and Cloudflare bid the same seats, but the traffic steering is painful to undo.

Overview

Zscaler is based in San Jose. Zscaler Internet Access inspects outbound web traffic, and Zscaler Private Access replaces VPN for internal applications, together sold as a zero-trust exchange.

Deployment means a client on every laptop or a tunnel from every office, plus PAC files and identity integration with Okta or Microsoft. Once that steering is in place, a switch to Palo Alto Prisma Access, Netskope, or Cloudflare is a fleet-wide network change.

The budget Zscaler wins often used to be a branch firewall refresh, which is why Fortinet and Cisco feel it as well as the other cloud proxies. Seat renewals, not new logo deals, are where the switching cost shows up.

Competition footprint

Traffic-steering configuration is customer-specific and does not export into a rival proxy.

Identity integration ties Zscaler to Okta or to Microsoft, so an identity change and a proxy change collide.

Branch offices that retired local firewalls have no on-premises fallback if the cloud proxy changes.

Consumer & business angle

Users notice Zscaler as the agent on the laptop and as the path their browser takes.

Network teams that decommissioned VPN concentrators cannot reverse that over a weekend.

What to watch

  • Seat renewals against Prisma Access and Netskope.
  • Whether branch firewall budgets keep moving to cloud proxy seats.
